JEREMIAH

8 Yahweh says,
“In that time they will dig up the bones of Judah’s kings, the bones of his rulers, the bones of the priests, the bones of the prophets and the bones of the citizens of Jerusalem from out of their graves. 2 They will spread them out before the sun and the moon and all the multitude in the heavens whom they love and they have served – whom they have followed after and of whom they inquired and to whom they bowed down. They will not be regathered nor buried; they will be like manure spread on the ground. 3 But for all the remnant, the ones left over from this wicked nation in all the other places, death will be chosen instead of living!” says Yahweh of Warriors.
4 “Then you will say to them,
‘This is what Yahweh has said, “If they fall, won’t they arise? If one turns away, won’t he return?” 5 Why, then, have these people, Jerusalem, gone back to ongoing apostasy? They have been determined in their deceit; they have rejected any turning around. 6 I have been paying attention, listening closely, but they will not speak the truth. No one is grief-stricken for his wickedness, saying, “What have I done?!” No, they are all turning down their own paths like a horse galloping recklessly into battle! 7 Even a stork in the heavens knows her designated times. The turtledove, the swallow and the crane have all kept to the time of their migration home, but my people just don’t get Yahweh’s verdict. 8 How can you say, “We are wise! Yahweh’s Law is with us!”? You need to get this: it has been presented deceptively! The pen of the scribes has lied! 9 The wise men are humiliated. They are broken and trapped. Get this too: they have rejected Yahweh’s word, so what wisdom do they actually have? 10 Therefore I will give their wives to other men and their fields will be taken over. For, from the least to the greatest – to a man – they all want a hearty slice of corrupted success. From prophet to priest, each man practices deceit. 11 They superficially heal the hurting of my beloved people, saying, “Peace, peace!” But there is no peace. 12 Are they ashamed of their repulsive behaviour? No, they are not ashamed of their disgrace – they don’t even know how to blush! Therefore they will fall with those falling; in their day of reckoning they will stagger. Yahweh has spoken.
13‘“Harvest time? I will sweep it away,” says Yahweh. “There will be no grapes on the vine and no figs on the fig tree. The greenery has withered, and what I have given them will slip away from them.”’
