1 JOHN
1 That which was from the beginning, that we have heard, that our eyes have seen, that we have studied and our hands have touched, regarding the Word of Life. 2 Now this Life was revealed – and we have seen, we tell about, and we announce this Life of the Age to you which was with the Father and was revealed to us. 3 What we have seen and heard we announce also to you so that you may have fellowship with us – the same fellowship we have with the Father and with his son Jesus Christ. 4 So we are writing these things so that our joy may be filled up.
5 And this is the message which we have heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light and in him there is absolutely no darkness. 6 If we say that we have fellowship with him but we are walking in darkness, we are shown to be liars and are not living the truth. 7 But if we are walking in the light as he is in the light we have fellowship with each other and the blood of Jesus his son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we don’t have any sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth isn’t in us. 9 If we confess our sins he is faithful and right in taking those sins away, and he will cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we haven’t sinned we are making him a liar and his word isn’t in us.
2 My young children, I write these things to you so that you mightn’t sin. But if someone does sin, we have an intercessor towards the Father, the righteous one Jesus Christ. 2 He is the reconciling sacrifice for our sins – and not only ours but also for the whole world. 3 We can be sure we know him in this: if we keep his commands. 4 The one who says, “I have known him,” but isn’t keeping his commands is a liar and the truth isn’t in him. 5 For whoever is keeping his word, in this man the love of God has truly been perfected. This is how we know we are in him. 6 The one who says that he remains in him ought to live as he lived. 7 Loved ones, I’m not writing you a new command but an old command, one that you had from the beginning – the old command is the word that you heard. 8 Again, I’m writing you a new command that is true in him and in you because the darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining. 9 The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother is still in the darkness. 10 The one who loves his brother lives in the light and there is no disgrace in him, 11 but the one who hates his brother is in the dark and walks around in the dark and doesn’t know where he is going because the darkness has blinded his eyes.
12 I’m writing to tell you, little children, that your sins have been sent away through his name.
13 I’m writing to tell you, fathers, that you know the one who was from the beginning.
I’m writing to tell you, young people, that you have conquered the Evil One.
I wrote to tell you, children, that you know the Father.
14 I wrote to tell you, fathers, that you know the one who was from the beginning.
I wrote to tell you, young people, that you are strong and the word of God lives in you and you have conquered the Evil One.
15 Don’t love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father isn’t in him. 16 For all that’s in the world: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the bragging about lifestyle don’t come from the Father but from the world. 17 The world and its lusts are passing away, but the one who is doing God’s will is living into the Age.
18 Children, it is the last hour and, as you have heard that Pseudochrist comes, even now many pseudochrists have come. This is how we know it’s the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they weren’t part of us because if they were part of us they would have stayed with us; but they left so that it would be made obvious that none of them are part of us. 20 And you have anointing from the Holy One, and you all know this. 21 I haven’t written to tell you that you don’t know the truth but that you do know her and that no lie comes from the truth. 22 And who is the liar but one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This one is the pseudochrist: the one who denies the Father and the Son. 23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. The one who confesses the Son has the Father as well. 24 As for you, then, let what you heard from the beginning remain in you. If that which you heard from the beginning remains in you, you also will remain in the Son as well as in the Father. 25 And this is the promise he made to us: the life of the Ages!
26 I wrote these things to you concerning those who are leading you astray. 27 The anointing you have from him remains in you – you don’t need anyone to teach you, instead the anointing from him teaches you about everything. It is true, not a lie, and as he taught you, remain in him. 28 And now, little children, we remain in him, so that when he is being presented we may be courageous and not turn away in shame from him at his coming. 29 If you perceive that he is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of him.
3 Just marvel at what kind of love that has been given to us, that we may be called God’s children! But indeed we are! That means this world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. 2 Loved ones, we are now God’s children and it’s not yet revealed what we will be. We do know that when he is revealed we will be like him so that we may see him just as he is. 3 Everyone having this hope in him keeps purifying himself just as that one is pure. 4 Everyone practising sin also practises lawlessness – for sin is lawlessness – 5 and you know that that one was revealed so he might bear those sins, and also that sin is not in him. 6 Everyone who stays in him isn’t sinning, but everyone who is sinning has neither seen him nor known him. 7 Little children, may no one lead you astray! The one practising righteousness is righteous, just as that one is righteous. 8 The one practising sin is from the devil because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. This is why the son of God was revealed: that he may be undoing the works of the devil. 9 Everyone born from God isn’t sinning because his seed lives in him, and he isn’t enabled to sin because he has been born from God. 10 This is how God’s children and the devil’s children are distinguished: everyone who doesn’t practise righteousness is not from God, and neither is the one not loving his brothers. 11 For this is the message you heard from the start: that we should love each other – 12 not like Cain, who was from the evil one and slaughtered his brother. And why did he slaughter him? Because his works were evil, but his brother’s were righteous.
13 Don’t be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you. 14 We have seen that we have moved out of death into life in that we love our brothers. The one who doesn’t love the brother remains in death. 15 Anyone hating his brother is a murderer, and you have seen that no murderer has the life of the Age living in him. 16 This is how we have known God’s love: that that one laid his life down for our sake – and we owe it to our brothers to lay the lives down. 17 Whoever has worldly possessions but watches his brother remain in need and closes his compassion off from him, how can God’s love be living in him? 18 My little children, may we not love in word or in tongue but in action and truth – 19 it’s in this we will know that we are of the truth and our hearts will be assured before him, 20 because even if our hearts accuse us, God is greater than our hearts and he knows everything. 21 Loved ones, if our heart doesn’t accuse us, we have confidence towards God, 22 and whatever we ask we receive from him because we are keeping his commands and doing what is pleasing in his sight. 23 And this is his command: that we should believe in the name of his son Jesus Christ, and that we love each other the way he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps his commands remains in him, and he in them. This is how we know that he remains in us: by the Spirit he gave us.
